The Military Still Doesn’t Get It

November 17th, 2006 by Pocoju

It would be comical if it didn’t hamper our military by reducing the number of troops and experts available.  The bill says E pluribus unum, but in practice we are still dividing our country with false boundaries.

NYTimes on Bush and the Election

November 5th, 2006 by Pocoju

Yikes, a very frightening thought of the message of Republicans retaining power will send, irrespective of the use of that power.

The Difference Two Years Made - New York Times

This election is indeed about George W. Bush — and the Congressional majority’s insistence on protecting him from the consequences of his mistakes and misdeeds. Mr. Bush lost the popular vote in 2000 and proceeded to govern as if he had an enormous mandate. After he actually beat his opponent in 2004, he announced he now had real political capital and intended to spend it. We have seen the results. It is frightening to contemplate the new excesses he could concoct if he woke up next Wednesday and found that his party had maintained its hold on the House and Senate.

Ann Coulter Sucks

November 2nd, 2006 by Pocoju

Ann Coulter is a moron. Look at this article title

JIHAD IS FUN! VOTE DEMOCRAT!

I swear, she has two hats, one full of democratic names and one full of anti-American things, she picks two, and writes an article, no thinking required.

John Kerry has now called members of the U.S. military (a) stupid, (b) crazy, (c) murderers, (d) rapists, (e) terrorizers of Iraqi women and children. I wonder what he’ll call them tomorrow.

The first two are from his botched joke. No one ever said he was rico suave. It’s obviously, though, that he didn’t mean it that way. This is just an opportunity for her to change the subject from conservative failings. As for c,d,and e though it’s not the militaries job to do these things, they certainly have been done by Americans. Or perhaps Ann Coulter was thinking of the infallable All-Saints Brigade.

I didn’t read past the first article and you shouldn’t read past this post.

A Hudna, At What Cost?

November 1st, 2006 by Pocoju

Great editorial, very forceful that he wants to end the violence, but then he slides in that “we must end the occupation”. I doubt he means that the hudna must accompany a withdrawal from the west bank, so I’m not sure how to interpret.
From NYTimes.com- Pause for Peace By AHMED YOUSEF

A truce is referred to in Arabic as a “hudna.” Typically covering 10 years, a hudna is recognized in Islamic jurisprudence as a legitimate and binding contract. A hudna extends beyond the Western concept of a cease-fire and obliges the parties to use the period to seek a permanent, nonviolent resolution to their differences. The Koran finds great merit in such efforts at promoting understanding among different people. Whereas war dehumanizes the enemy and makes it easier to kill, a hudna affords the opportunity to humanize one’s opponents and understand their position with the goal of resolving the intertribal or international dispute.

There can be no comprehensive solution of the conflict today, this week, this month, or even this year. A conflict that has festered for so long may, however, be resolved through a decade of peaceful coexistence and negotiations. This is the only sensible alternative to the current situation. A hudna will lead to an end to the occupation and create the space and the calm necessary to resolve all outstanding issues.
